What’s the difference between the 582 and the 582 special?????

582 special was economy version of 582 the special was belt driven 582 was hydro driven.

582 special = belt driven peerless 4-speed transaxle similar to JD and other brands at the time
582 = IH 3-speed rearend typically used in IH Cub Cadet gear drive tractors. 582 is not a hydro.

While the transaxle was driven by a belt, it still had shaft drive to a right angle gearbox that drove the belt. It's basically the same setup that the 1100 and 482 had, but with the engine that the 582 had (which was a pretty solid engine at the time).

Some people poopoo that rear end, but by no means was it a "bad" rear end, just not as heavy as the IH 3 speed. As Matt says, plenty of heavy duty machines used that rear end.

I been thinking about buying one of these specials. Not happy about the belt drive and briggs engines. whats one worth in decent running condition ?
