Hello 169 owners!
can you tell me what the machine or kind code is on a legit 169??
I know the serial number series begins with 506737
Thanks in advance

David = I'm confused with Charlie's answer, so just to make sure it's clear. The answer to your question is "No", the serial numbers for 169's were not consecutive. The serial numbers for all the models ran consecutive as they came down the line. So if a 129 was built right behind a 169 it got the next serial number.

Now, I don't recall how we know the very 1st 169 built is Serial Number 506737, and owned by Thurmond Swafford, but I'll attach a pic of his Serial Number tag so you can see it shows 2050048U506737. The Kind Code is 205 (as it is for all Cub Cadets). The Machine or Model Code is 0048.

And just so you can tell the serial numbers are not consecutive, my 169 is Serial Number 523760. I'll also attach a pic of it below so you can see the Serial Number 523760, the Kind Code 205, and the Machine/Model Code 0048. (If the 169's were all consecutive serial numbers mine would be the 17,023 one built after Thurmond's but we know IH didn't built that many - so it proves the 169's don't have consecutive serial numbers). Sure wish my tag wasn't all scratched up, but heck, when you find a machine at the junk yard you gotta take what you can get.

And for what it's worth, my son's 169 is Serial Number 523764, so it's the 4th Cub Cadet built after my 169. No way to know what models the 3 built in between were, but I do wonder if his is the next 169 built after mine. Here's a pic of his tag.

What makes ya think that the numbers weren't consecutive. Got any paperwork that say one way or the other?

I was under the impression that the last 4005 Wide Frames were all 169’s..... they didn’t make any other model during that time... so they should all be consecutive from the first to the last.....

Charlie - what I was trying to say was that the 169s were not consecutive, that "all the models" were consecutive. And no, I don't have any paperwork BUT I do have the pics of the serial number tags I posted. As I noted, Thurmond's is serial number 506737. Mine is 523760. That means between when Thurmond's was built and mine was built there were 17,023 Cub Cadets built AND they all couldn't have been 169's. The Wisconsin archives indicate 4005 169's were built.

Scott - there had been some discussion about the last wide frame models produced were 169's, but the serial numbers don't seem to prove that out. As I noted above, the very first one was 17,023 units before my serial number. That said, IH couldn't have built all 4005 model 169's at the same time.

My 169 was built in Sept. 1974 and came with a manual lift.. Don't know what month was the last of the pre quietlines..

Bill and Kevin - yes it seems a lot of 169s were built towards the end of production of the wide frames in 1974. We had a Forum member that was keeping track of the 169 serial numbers and when they were built. Here's part of the list he put together. Sure looks like the last ones were built in Oct. 1974. (I have the owners name for each one on the list but I didn't include them since they are likely confidential).

Charlie - this also helps prove the 169 serial numbers are not consecutive.

Is that list up to date?
and are that all there is that are accounted for?
looks like there are about 6,000 numbers between the 1st few and the net batch.

Could not get it running even with a good carb so had to push it onto the trailer.
S/G seems real weak even with a booster. Looks like it has balance gears.
All the important parts are there but the carb that was on it is toast.
Someone bored out the air cleaner base mounting holes to 1/4" and had bolts in them!
Hood hinge is broken as is the grill but the tin IH decal is there yet. Missing one tail lamp lens
Gas tank looks really good inside as well, seat is shop and the a50 deck is kind of ratty.
Buttons were stuck in the up position but I got them down so it will roll, now they are stuck down!
I'm happy with it.

Nice find David! What are your plans for it?

Will get it running and moving as is if I can and put it away for now.
Will be looking for a #30 carb to rebuild though. I took along the #26 from the 128 to try and get it started.
PO said he had not run it in 3 years or so but it was stored inside.
Still have my 128 on the table w/the motor still in the bucket from the machine shop 2 months ago!
Will get that together this weekend I hope and put a blade on it for snow.

David - no the list is not up to date. It's just a copy I got along time ago and I posted because Charlie was asking about documentation.

There is a thread (which I think Charlie closed) titled
169 OWNERS COLLECT HERE
You might find it useful.

Oak - that sure is a nice looking original machine.
