c. PTO safety switch added @441194 7/1972
d. Brake style PTO @482000 at about 8/1973
e. serial# 500000 is a 149 late Jan 1974
f. linkage on hydro is changed @503725
g. 1st 169 is built @506737
Thank you for this list. So I take it Kohler made some cylinder head changes during the 1X8/1X9 series tractors and mine being a '71 model year would have an older head style?

Picture of my k301 spark plug location on the '71 129.

Re: the three holes on the frame, I see on the right side, they are used to mount the bracket for the hydraulic cylinder anchor point. I have also seen these holes used to mount FEL frames. My observations.

So I'm willing to bet the three holes appeared at the same time the serial tag number changed from the rear end to that side part of the frame my best estimate is somewhere around March of 73

Allen, correct, the spark plug was moved to be over the exhaust valve. Here's a photo of a K301 that I have that a previous owner had changed the head to the newer style and had cut out the shroud and muffler bracket to fit it. David Kirk rebuilt it for me to his Killer Kohler specifications.

Thanks for the picture showing the head change that Kohler made during the wide frame models. That sure is a pretty engine and can only dream of owning a Kirk built engine someday.

I'm blessed to own two Kirk built engines. The K301 in the photo and a K241 that I have yet to install in a chassis. :D

after SN 500000 was used for promotions and shows, a IH employee bought it and I believe
It ended
up at their family cabin in Wisconsin. They did not understand the value of this tractor! If you happen to see a 149 up there it would be a good idea to check the serial number.

My favorite cubs are the late model 149's and I would love to come across that machine just to know SN 500000 is still in existence!

I don't prefer the wide frames as much as the narrow frames but Kraig that is a very cool photo!

Additional information to what Scott has been posting, I have 2 149"s (1) SN 442961 mfg. Aug 72 purchased summer of 78, (2) SN 490127 mfg. Nov 73.

Here is a picture of the Aug 72 - 149: No holes

Just for reference in the same post, here is my 1450 with the holes: You can see them in front of the brake pedal

1450 left.JPG

I don't have a picture of the Nov 73 - 149 and with it being winter I'm not sure Dad could get to it... but I would guess it has the 3 holes because it had a brake type PTO.... The pictured 149 does have the PTO Safety Switch.... so it is "new enough" for that update, but old enough to not have the holes.

That one was our work horse for years.... it was the only one we owned (we still have it, it just has a bunch of company now), so it did everything. 5Snow, Mow, Till, Plow.... you name it... it's semi-retired now as it get to wear the blade and chains year-around. It has probably 2500+ Hours on everything but the engine... and it's on the 3rd rebuild of the 2nd engine (1400+ hours on the engine, except the rod, piston and gaskets to get to them).... which is why it's black. You can see it's younger brother in the background.... that one has taken over mowing duty......

I currently have three 128's. The two with the serial tag on the rear only have the three holes on the right side (opposite side from brake pedal).
The one with the serial tag on the frame has the three holes on both sides.

Can you post serial number(s) ?
Thanks
The 71 is s/n 405440. The other one I had said earlier was a 72 is actually an April 73 machine having a s/n 461906. For a while I also owned a March 74 machine that had the PTO Brake. The s/n on that was 504039
