    Removing head studs from K321

I bought the rebuilt block from Kustom Lawn and Garden & Clark Racing in Ohio. Arrived six week after ordering. The core is worth up to $175 (from a phone conversation). Plan to ship back Thanksgiving week.

    Removing head studs from K321

Thanks for all the help. Was able to remove the head studs today after a week of soaking with Kano Kroil. Needed to remove as I have a rebuilt short block and need to send this block back for a core charge and the box wasn't going to close the head studs in place.

Question for the forum. Having a K161 rebuilt and the shop has found that the piston sits proud of the block by approx. 0.150 inches. Any suggestions? Shop has checked the rod twice and the piston is standard size. Here is the K181 that was rebuilt last year after running for ten minutes...

Question on a K161 rebuild for my 72 (assembled Jan 1969). Shop is telling me that the piston is sitting proud of the block by approximately 1/4 inch. Block and crank were machined 0.010. Sounds like they have the wrong rod - all Kohler parts used. Which is the correct rod to use? Looking...

Update on the 149 leaking oil - after a couple of things that killed my cub time - a plumbing issue in the house and a 34 hour power outage - I was finally able to perform some diagnostics yesterday. The items to look at by Charlie were fine. So I dug into the oil breather and found the inlet...

Question on the 149 - oil is leaking from the governor shaft onto the points cover. Lost approximately 1/3 of the oil in 30 minutes. Is there a fix? Started two weeks ago - no problems before that. Engine was rebuilt approximately 2 years ago.

Was working on the 149 yesterday - grease fitting on the front axle broke off. I have new grease fitting on order with Charlie. What is the best way to remove the broken off piece left in the front axle? The piece spins but does not back out.

Question on the K161 (I thought) from my 72 (Jan 1969) that I am trying to have rebuilt. The machine shop is telling me that the cylinder bore measures 2.875" but the Kohler book says 2.938" - the piston is marked standard. So is this a K161 or some other beast (K160)? The Kohler book I have...

Finally figured out why the 149 quit running - the coil wire from the ignition switch to the coil had rubbed on the cub until the wire was gone. A simple splice would have fixed it. But since I found out that a previous PO had changed the ignition switch to a non cub switch - I replaced it...

Thanks for the picture of the back side of a 149 ignition switch. The PO cut off the three pin connector so I will need to create my own connections to the new ignition switch. So I need to know what wires, by color, go to the B, S and M designators on the backside of the ignition switch...

Well I was gone all week and was finally able to work on the 149 this afternoon. Was able to get a spark by directly wiring the battery to the + side of the coil. I then removed the gas tank to look at the solenoid and ignition switch. PO butchered the wiring and did not used a stock/OEM...

Okay. The 149 is in the garage after being towed home. No spark - I do not have 12 V at the + of the coil. Bad ignition switch? Can I bypass the ignition switch be supplying 12 V directly to the + side of the coil?

Charlie - of course there is gas - but there were bubbles coming into the fuel filter from the carb but was doing that yesterday also. Shut down was closer the shutting off the key versus running out of gas. How do you lock the release lever in place?

Was having seat time on the 149 today, after 10 minutes of mowing it quit. Replaced the condenser, coil, spark plug and spark plug wire turns over but will not fire. Any suggestions? Worked fine yesterday with 90 minutes of mowing without missing a lick. If I have to tow it (since it is at...

Looking ahead to installing a PTO back on the 149, even though we had a dusting of snow yesterday. I have a rebuilt PTO from my 72 which is down for an engine rebuild. Can I use a narrow frame PTO on the 149? Will be mounting a 38" mower deck.

Jim and Nic, Thanks for the info on removing the fly wheel. Was able to borrow my neighbor's puller and it came right off. The engine is now in process of being rebuilt after deflagrating a month ago. Those Kohler parts are sure expensive! Jim

Working on the 149 - what is the secret to removing the flywheel? I am using a basic flywheel puller but will not budge.
