Quinn G, Regarding the coil, you can't use a regular automotive coil type on these Kohler engines. It has to have an internal resistor if I remember correctly. The sponsors at the top of the page can help you out with a new one. I think NAPA has a coil available for Kohler engines as well...

Digger, after reading a ton of comments in the archives about the balance gears, I see that it doesn't take a sledgehammer to break the upper balance gears. That's what concerned me about the FAQ you posted. So I will remove them. Thanks for the help.

yep, that's the balance gear. Do I need to remove the upper gear also?

Maintenance. Or in the case of my neighbors 149, apparently, zero maintenance since it was born in 1973. This job started out as a head gasket/valve job and tuneup. The head gasket was blown but the valves only needed lapping and adjusting. I had to pull the engine to find the timing mark (which...

    Doug, got it. Thanks.

Thanks. But I'm going to have to pull the engine to clean and put a paint mark on the flywheel. Then, maybe I'll be able to see it with a timing light.

Doug, that's kind of hard to see. Is the line at the 9 o'clock position the BTDC line?

Doug. There is a half moon slot as you've described. But with the starter/gen in place, I don't know how you could use a timing light to see the mark. Also, I'm not seeing a TDC or a BTDC mark on the flywheel. I think I'm going to pull the engine to clean up the flywheel and see if it's marked.

Digger, David. This must be an odd one. No hole on either side. My k301 has a hole like the one in your picture. It will be a challenge to drill a hole in the proper place.

Another question. I can't find a hole in the back cover to see the timing mark. This is the 149 with a k321. They did leave an access hole, didn't they?

Thanks Kraig. That would be a tough one to make. Do you know where I could buy one?

Hi all. The release lever bracket on the 149 hydro has broken off and it's missing. I'd like to make a new one but I don't know what it looks like. Does anyone have a diagram/picture of it?

Hi all. I have a question about a 149 with a hydro trans. My neighbor owns it but he wants me to look at the engine to see if it needs a rebuild. My question is this: Do I need to do anything special to tow it (about 500 ft.) to my garage without doing any damage? It's been sitting in his barn...

I'm having a problem with my 126 gear shifter. It seems to have loosened up to the point of not going into gear correctly. Is there a diagram of the transmission or some simple fix for this?
