Kohler Mag 20 dumping fuel again

Around here most of the loggers have switched to aviation fuel for their chainsaws. Even “ethanol free” has traces of ethanol. Not long after ethanol came out I went through three fuel lines in one saw in just one season. Stihl adapted and came out with new fuel lines of a different...

    1977, 1650 project

@Stevenovick1 ...I'm guessing because the paint inhibits the heat dissipation. I thought long and hard about that but saw some pics of them painted so decided to go ahead and paint. I should have asked on here first. I will get it stripped off.

Next will be more linkage that needs installed, external brakes need cleaned up and re-installed, disassemble the steering box and check that out as well as install a few new tweaks, then the wiring, and then to dropping the engine in. Lots to do but feel better about where Ava's headed. I can...

Rear end all cleaned up. Probably original lube and it was gooey. Cleaned out good, new gasket, torqued down and ready for the new expensive Hy-Trans. Noticed a little dirt on the three point attachment after I took the pic but Ava's rear end looks better than ever!

    1977, 1650 project

Made my choice on paint and have been busy since the last post. Work overwhelmed me a few weeks ago and everything came to a screeching halt. But back at it this week off and on. This "new" axle looks much better...especially after wire wheel, sandblasting and paint.

Thanks so much everyone! Should have asked these questions before I "bought and shot". And glad I just bought a few rattle cans. Think I will go back to the drawing board and start over. I've read much of the Rust Oleum vs. Iron Gard threads on this forum and see valid points on all sides...

Thanks guys. That makes more sense. I've seen what looked like different shades on different photos and machines on this site. The rattle can I got was Cadet White, 759-3259. It would be better called "Cadet Almond, 759-3259". Nice paint...applied nicely over the auto primer white I sprayed...

@Paul Turner....Ha ha! Actually live downriver from "my" hot springs and get teased about that and the campground quite a bit. And I look a lot like the few pictures that exist of the old trapper that area was named after. I've been to "my" hot springs numerous times but always for business...

Wow! You guys don't have much good news. Hmmm. Will ignore the front axle, work on the rest, and start looking. Was the front axle the same for the QLS? 1250 - 1650?

The big chunks got smaller today. And the underside of the front axle sure has taken a beating at some point in the past.

    Hi from Idaho.

Welcome from a fellow Idahoan! I'm currently working on a 1650. Got mine from my cousin. It also came with a snowplow, tiller and mower deck. Jealous on the sickle bar. Soon as I'm done with morning coffee I will be back to work on it.

Thanks @mfrade...Good thing I ordered a new crimper last week then! Should be here in the next few days. That's why I come here. I'm assuming I know very little and the consensus on this forum is the way to proceed.

All good thoughts. Thanks guys. Going to de-pin the main switch receptacle (the new one) and do that all over. I've been consistently using heavy wire throughout. Like to over-build. :). The main wire from the battery to the solenoid and from the solenoid to the starter I've replaced with...

Also thought some of you might get a kick out of this pic! Initially noticed the governor spring was wore but forgot about it when I was cleaning and painting parts. So the old one got all spiffed up. At assembly I realized there was not much left to work with! Hole and spring about wore...

    1977, 1650 project

Working on making a new wiring harness. Decided to make my own as it will be less expensive and I enjoy soldering and doing such things. I am using all new wire, soldered and crimped connections, etc. Here is a pic showing how nasty the receptacle was for the main switch. But also, just...

Bald Faced Hornets in Front Yard Tree

I worked 15 years as a logger, most of that as a timber faller. This time of year we would be stung daily from bees nesting in the ground and big paper nests like that. We would start at first light so we could get our work day in before it got too hot. I remember walking in to a strip...

    Por 15

Will be able to tell you in a few years. :) Just used Por15 on the engine, (block and metal) on my 1650 project. I followed the full process and followed up with flat black enamel (non Por15 product) on top. Impressed with the product so far and everything seemed to bond well...but time will...

Any ideas on reattaching a serial number sticker? It and the model number sticker were coming loose on the blower housing. I masked them off when I repainted the housing and in the process of pulling the masking tape off the serial number sticker came completely off. Here's a pic of how tough...
