    Do Carburetors wear out?

    I’ve seen lots of discussions recently about replacing stock carbs with Asian “will fit” carbs. What is it that wears such that it can not be repaired/overhauled? Everything is available isn’t it? Needle, seat, floats, throttle shaft bushings etc? Help me understand.

    109 steering knuckle

    Anyone tried replacing the spindle bolt and spacer only to find the spacer is too short? I torqued mine to spec and it just squeezed the knuckle onto the cast iron axle such that it would not move. I compared it to the old spacer and it’s just a hair shorter.

    Re-torquing head bolts

    Opinion needed: After break in, Do you merely check that the head bolt is at least the prescribed reading, or do you break each loose one at a time an then torque to spec?

    Was the “O” model a counter clockwise generator? Did the “O” use the same generator as the 70? I notice in the service manual for the model 70 & 100 that the generators have different Delco numbers. 1951 & 1967 respectively. Aside from that difference, everything spec listed is identical.     K161 Help

    I’ve a newly acquired model 70 that doesn’t let the dipstick stay seated - it keeps puffing it up. I removed the breather and it appears to be correctly installed to these untrained eyes. Assuming it is correctly installed, what else might I be facing? Photo of the direction the valve was facing.

    Air filters

    What were the applications for the large filters/covers? A 70 I just purchased had the long (or tall) element with a short cover. I’ve ordered the short element and a tall cover so I can go either way.

    Tachometer

    Does anyone have a suggestion for a good and reliable tachometer for single cylinder engines? I purchased a cheap LED ($25-$30) from amazon, but it wavers all over the place. Thanks John

    Serial # on a “70”

    I picked up a “70” the other day. When checking the ser#, it seems to be in the 28,000 range which I believe would make it a pre 1963. Maybe a 62. What differences besides decals should I look to to determine if it is earlier than a “70?”

    Parts diagrams

    Is it just me, or is anyone else unable to access the parts diagrams at cubcadet.com? I used to be able to view diagrams of my 104 & 109 and order parts off of the diagrams. I’ll be darned if I can figure out how to do it now. Maybe they’ve removed the older models. Thanks , John

    How much work am I looking at?

    My 109 needs a new flywheel screen. I’ve obtained a new one from ccspecialties. Can I/do I slide the driveshaft back or do I unbolt and slide forward the engine? Thanks, John

    Skid shoes

    Transmission lube.

    Stupid question of the day: I’ve read the shop manual and the FAQ. I still am not clear if I use Hy-Tran or gear lube (90 weight) in the tranny. Is it an either/or situation? 104 model.
