Hi Folks,

A 782 is listed locally to me, but the guy doesn't have a ton of information about it.

Any chance you serial number gurus can look at this serial number and tell me what I am dealing with?

2050594U693704*

Thank you!

1981 still built at the Louisville plant I think.

if you dont mind me asking, how did you determine that? i found the FAQ for the tractor specs, but it just gives the range from 81-84 for the last numbers being 693704. how did you find out that its a 81 in that range?

just curious and trying to learn more. thanks again for the help!

The chart shows 693143 first s/n in April 1981, I assumed it was built in the same month.

The first serial number for tractors built in April of 81 was 693143. Look at the number tag and see if it says International Harvester or Cub Cadet. MTD took over in May of 81. If your tag says International it’s likely one of the last built by them in 81. If it says Cub Cadet is was likely built by MTD between May of 81 and 1985. Don’t know if anyone has a serial number breakdown for the MTD years.

ah, i understand what you are saying. thank you. i was looking at the chart incorrectly.

it is an international tag. the price seems a bit high for what he has, but i'll probably stop by this weekend and see if there is any wiggle room.

it is a 782 with two cutting decks and a snow blower. according to him all in good working condition, with some relatively minor cosmetic issues. he is asking 1300 for the package.

Howdy folks,

I found another 782 that looks like a good option. Can you please help me decipher this serial number?

Model: 144782399
Serial: 2050601U737324

Thanks!

It's a MTD/Cub Cadet Corporation built unit which started at S/N 700001. With a serial # of U737324, it will have an aluminum transmission housing rather than the IH Cast Iron housing and it will be painted black. The first ~20,000 MTD built Cadets used IH supplied Cast Iron transmissions. Be sure to check to see if it has a KT-17 Series II engine. The Series II engines have pressure lube to the rod bearings so you won't throw the rod while operating on inclines.

The KT17 Series I were installed at the factory in Chassis Serial Numbers below 726124.

The KT17 Series II were installed at the factory in Chassis Serial Numbers above 726125.

The 144782399 is not the serial number. It is a Model number. Here is the breakdown:

144- 1984 model year
782- Tractor model 782
399- IH Red paint scheme

The serial number would be the last six sequential of the lower number, which above is 737324. There should not be two tractors sharing the same six digit sequential number.

I understand that MTD didn't keep records of serial numbers and years of manufacture, and it's difficult to date a 782 built by them.

MTD did get better by 1986. They did place a separate build date/plant/shift decal by the serial number tag on the frame.
