Even though I have had good luck with the China replacement carbs on two of my Cubs, I would go with the rebuilt by the Cub dealer route. In the long run, it will be the wiser choice.

I'm a rookie at this. I know nothing about rebuilding a carb. Original carb is really gummed up. It has sat for 30+ years. Local Cub dealer wants $100 to rebuild it. I just replaced the key switch and I now have power to starter. With carb off, I got it to fire by using starting fluid. Now I need a working carb to get it running.
also a novice, i breathed life back into a B&S mower carb by disassembling it and giving everything a good solvent bath + scrubbing then reassembling it with new seals/gasket.

fellas, could one do that with a Cub’s carb too? (assuming the OEM/NOS seals/gasket are available.)

Hello Dan,
I have a 102 as well [1967] and although I have not had the carb apart I have worked on old small engines. Just take your time and take it apart. A few pictures are good to help you when you go to reassemble. Lots of people to help you here.

Yes carb parts are usually available. There were 2 or 3 main carb manufacturers back in the day..get the carb brand and model and many suppliers can usually be found with kits.

Dan,a little encouragement. You can do this rebuild .our sponsors certainly have rebuild kits...The only testy part is unscrewing internal jets .They are brass and get set up pretty good .I use torch tip cleaners to clean the center hole.Polish the bowl out with steel wool .Lots of carb cleaner. If you have access to a carb soaker use it.The 2 outside jets usually come out easy and holes need to cleaned as well.I just did this yesterday and my jets were 2 turns out from bottom.. new intake gasket matters(CARB/INTAKE) so no air leaks..

New topic for my 102...My steering wheel turns 1/4 of a turn before any of the linkage moves. What could be my problem? The steering wheel is also popped up out of the dash about an inch or so.

Hi Dan,
I suspect the cam follower in the "Ross" steering box is worn flat on the sides. It shouId be more of a cone shape. I recently took my steering box apart to find this out. In order to do this you will need to remove the steering wheel and that can be challenging. Then undo the steering box mount underneath the tractor and the steering rod attached to the front left wheel. There is good documentation on this site about the information you require. Happy to help if I can. Sean.

Ask Digger how to easily pop that steering wheel off

Recently did that on a 108..bought a grade 8 ...1/2 fine thread bolt >Had a buddy lathe a rounded nose on internal end..worked just fine.My experience pulled the whole shaft but I wonder if by removing mounting bolts there is enough room to remove side plate..Any thoughts??

I guess you could, but it'd be very difficult to clean it or replace the bearings and races without removing it from the tractor. It'd be best to just remove it.

How does the plastic cap on the steering wheel come off? I want to avoid damaging it if possible.
I guess I'm going to have to buy a 102 repair manual. I see manuals called "service" manuals, are they one in the same?
Where is a good place to buy the repair manual?

It just pries off. If it is all hazy and yellow it will be hard to not damage it. New aftermarket ones aren't expensive. You can download a pdf of the service manual from http://ccmanuals.info. if you really want to buy a hard copy, Binder Books has reprints.

I finally got my fuel tank back from the radiator shop. It was so bad they had to take it apart to get it clean. They replaced the bolt that screws into the tank and connects to the fuel bowl. How far does this bolt screw into the tank? I didn't see any seals when I took the tank off. Just don't see how this won't leak.
