What’s a John Deere?

See, a John Deere is an ugly green colored machine that for whatever reason some of us here (me included!) own along with our Cubs. It is very well known that the Cub Cadet is truly superior to the John Deere, but yet some of us own one or a few anyways. It's really strange how this happens, but it is suspected that the reason many of us own both is because we think we need a bit of variety in our collection!

I blame my brother, he went to work for a power equipment dealer that sells John Deere. Him working there does have Cub Cadet benefits however as he lets me know when one gets traded in. So far I've picked up three of them at rock bottom prices. First one was a $300 125 with headlights, wheel weights, a windbreaker cab and rotary broom, got that one back in the early 1990's, then a 102 (forget how much I paid for this one, maybe $150?) with headlights, wheel weights and a 42" mower deck, sold that one to a forum member minus the mower deck and wheel weights. The most recent was a $150, 1450 with JD wheel weights, dual stick hydraulics, a 44" mower deck, a QA42A snowthrower, and a rare cold start kit which is basically a mechanical clutch on the driveshaft. Problem with this one is it's non-running and is missing the air filter housing, the muffler, the muffler box and the side panels.

Not a garden tractor but a lawn tractor. An elderly friend of mine gave me this. I told him he could sell it for decent money but he didn’t want to bother.

I’m not sure if this is the place to post this, but it fits many topics, and maybe some of you have run into other greene staffers like this:

I am working out of town, and yesterday I needed some metric bolts. The customer talked me into trying the local Greene tractor dealer. He did not have them, but said he could get them, and they would be ready Tuesday morning. When I went to pick them up today, I had just realized that I may need a Loctite product, so I asked the parts man if he had any Loctite products. He said he had some and pointed in a general direction. Then he dropped a bombshell: he told me he always uses nail polish. I told him that he may have shared too much, and that we had just met.

I had not heard of using nail polish as a substitute for Loctite, but it is an intriguing tip if that is what he meant- and if you happen to have some handy when you need it. My wife would not understand if I asked to use hers.

I have used nail polish as a sort of lock tite substitute. I work in electronics and we used to use it quite frequently for small screws and nuts. We used white and red to color code some items as well. It works great. I still have a bottle of cheap white polish kicking around.

I have used it on my glasses to secure the screws. I've also used it to cover where the finish coating has worn off my glasses and is causing a rash (alergic reaction to that metal. Works well. Wife always has a bottle of clear around, and I use it. (Yes she knows why.... LOL, normally she has to help because I can't see what I am doing.........)

I bet your nails sure do look purdy...😜🤣🤣

That's a great idea for glasses. Between me and my boys that'll come in handy 👍👍

I have a couple of 345's. One bought new in '98 that now has abut 1k hours and the second my neighbor sold to me for $750, a 345 2001 that has abut 700 hours. both with water cooled Kawasaki engines. The newer one cost $6400 in 2001. Same old deal: service and

I have mowed with a 2001 345 that a good friends dad has owned since new. It is a decent machine, but I just can't do those colors at all.. hence why I shopped for a vintage Cub that was new enough not to have points and other archaic troublesome systems, but was heavy duty, but not plasticy.

Guy I work with has a 318 he's thinking about selling. I've seen it once, it looked to be in pretty decent shape, but the cool thing about it was that it has a Cat 0 3-point hitch on it.

Shawn, there are a few JD owners on this forum. My mom has a JD X585 that I get to use on a regular basis as I have to do the mowing and clearing of snow since my father passed away. It's one very nice tractor. I kind of like to think it's mine. View attachment 22515 Here's a photo of my father up at our cabin cutting some brush with it back in May of 2006.

That thing is a beast, I have never seen a bushhog pulled behind a garden tractor.

Been a member here for a few years so I might as well add my $0.02.
As I have seen here so far, it does not appear to be uncommon that a person might have a few different colors of tractors. I have owned a couple JD 420s for a long time. When I was a much younger man, I saw those come out and could not afford to buy one. At the time I had a big yard and garden but no money. :errrr: Fast forward a goodly number of years and somehow I managed to own two of them. A first year and last year model. Both are pretty good but in need of a freshening when I retire. Funny how it is, I have two and in the market now for a 430. I'm not sure what makes us want to have more than we can use but it does happen here.
