The D640 is a great engine. The problems with that machine will be the plastics and the wiring but if the price is right I would still grab it.

I think the Kubota is a bit thirsty in both gas and diesel although I have never owned a SGT with anything but a but a kubota engine so the Kohler could be just as bad. They are great running smooth engines used in a huge array of equipment. I have had a several go into the 2500 hr range. there is a facebook group that has the manuals scanned and free. Kubota engine parts are difficult to come by, I think they try to force you into a rebuild from an authorized shop.

Amazon search "Kubota Engine Parts" finds over 7000 matches. What more could you possibly need?:drool2:

I think what he means is it’s more expensive to buy the parts then A whole engine. Most 20hp size small engines are 3000hr motors expect problems after that. Yes there are exceptions but overall in the commercial lawn game 3k is when you look at replacement even the diesel. On the fuel side though you can’t beat a kubota on fuel efficiency. There gas is about the same a a kohler. Real world example I had a 2082 with a 60” mowing 4 acres would use just shy of 5 gal of gas per mow per week, got a Steiner with the 25hp d 902 kubota diesel and can mow same amount with a 72” 2.5x on Same amount of fuel. I’ve found some fuel per he charts on the web if memory serves kohlrabi where like 1.9gph a Kawasaki was like 1.3gph a kubota gas was 1.6gph and the diesel was 1.2gph.

Yes, sorry I was unclear. basically Kubota and their dealer network want to sell new or authorized rebuilt engines. as far as amazon kubota parts, I have found them to be poor quality and poor fit limited with no availability of oversize/undersize parts forcing you into additional new parts. basically as Jon said, you can rebuild your own engine but at 2500+ hours you are better off getting a new or authorized rebuilt as it will be about the same cost as what you will have in parts and machining work (if you can even find anyone to do just the machining work on the kubotas).

As far as fuel economy, as Jon stated the diesel was better than the gas for sure. but I use several ZTR's now and they mow much better, faster and with less fuel than the SGT did. my SGT is on snow blowing duty only now. the only Kohler I own is in a 106 FEL/tiller tractor.

to me, in the end, all the kubota powered tractors are the best that Cub made (including the yanmar tractors) but the plastics are easy to break so buy the bumper and/or dont run into stuff. I personally would have a kubota diesel repowered 982 if I could.

Going to look at it tomorrow. Seat is trashed, deck is rusty. says it has 1200 hours on it. said he used it this past summer but bought a zero turn. Whats it worth ?

Parts are easy to come by outside of Kubota. And at decent prices. Try a marine outlet or if you really have to Cyprus or the Netherlands even with shipping is cheaper than Cub Cadet. Kubota B7000, Cub Cadet 782D, Cub Cadet 1782

Search the Internet for Industrial Kubota Engine dealers. They have better pricing for genuine Kubota parts. You will need the real Kubota part numbers since they do not have access to AG/Construction side parts books.

When I rebuilt my Onan genset with Kubota D1105 3-cylinder engine, I found a company in Ohio that all they do is Kubota engines. It cost me about $500 in parts (piston, rings, bearings, gaskets, etc) and $500 in machine shop work.

I have seven Kubota diesels in different applications. Two being CC 782D. Great small engine which run forever.
