Engine pieces in magnetic drain plug

Thank you all for the advice. Normally, I wouldn't have even discovered those metal pieces until just before this upcoming winter when I did the annual oil change. Then I would have had to scramble to remove the engine before the first snow. Removed the engine for the first time about 3 years...

Engine pieces in magnetic drain plug

We have a Cub 1650 that's been in the family since brand new in 1975. I use it mainly for throwing/blowing snow with a QA36A in the winter here in Western NY. This spring I've been hauling soil and sand as I level our lawn. I change the oil at least once a year and usually just before winter as...

    Towing ability 127

Just 4 days ago I moved ~2,000 lbs of topsoil in our 5x8 trailer with our 1650 and dumped it around our lawn. I shoveled/arranged the soil so the hitch weight was only about 100 lbs. I was a bit concerned about traction on the lawn but waited til it was dry and had no issues. Plus, I use this...

    Blade or thrower?

Hi everyone. I rarely post here and it seems it's usually when I have a question. But today I can add my $.02 My 1650 has been in the family since brand new. I picked up and totally refurbished a QA36 thrower for it about 20 years ago. Yes, it has it's idiosyncrasies but here's how I get around...

    QA36A snowblower/thrower wear bar/scraper bar/shave plate

Thank you all for the thoughts and ideas. bcoakes: Nice pics of your work on your blower. Kraig: Nice pic of your '72 Panther. My parents actually bought twin '71 Panthers with 399 Kohlers in 1971. They sold one a couple decades ago. The other sat in the basement of their hunting camp for...

    QA36A snowblower/thrower wear bar/scraper bar/shave plate

Man, thanks for the heads up on those, Kraig. Plus, you gave me another idea. Also in our stable is a '71 Arctic Cat Panther that's been in the family 48 years (So the 1650 that runs this QA36A is 4 years younger) and which I restored 2 years ago. I completely refurbished the track including new...

    QA36A snowblower/thrower wear bar/scraper bar/shave plate

Hi All and thank you for the new forum. I don't post much here but first posted in about 2001ish. Getting the QA36A (Wide frame, yup) thrower ready for winter. The original shave plate on the very bottom of the unit under the auger is very worn. That, of course, is from many decades of blowing...

Ron S and grenade gears: Man, I hope you're right. Hopefully I've been worrying for nothing.

Another thing. Wayne mentioned Bob Scott in a post on Feb 16, 2018 at 2:03 pm. Had the honor of meeting Bob nearly 20 years ago when I was looking nationwide for a good QA36 or 42. Flew to Atlanta for Thanksgiving and saw an ad of his somewhere. Hopped one of our flights (I work for an airline)...

I posted a couple weeks ago about my 'frozen' 1650 engine which turned out to be the PTO. Thanks everyone for your help with that. Thinking this summer's project will be removing the grenade gears. Makes me nervous just thinking about those gears while running the QA36 at WOT. Will check the...

BTW, mentioned that I did a working restore on the 1650 last summer. In the fall I totally went through the QA32 blower/thrower like I do every few years or so. Afterward, the QA32 spun the most freely and easily I've ever seen it. So freely, in fact, that when connected to the 1650 it would...

Thanks all for the help with my stuck 1650 engine. Looking for a PTO. Tried to post a pic or two of the 1650 after I'd worked on it all last summer but the site said pics were too big. Might try later to resize and post.

You guys are good. Steve came the closest to solving my issue (He mentioned the PTO) with my 1650 engine frozen completely solid. Finally got the front casting, muffler and muffler shroud off. Very slow: Most of the aluminum casting to which the muffler shroud attaches is broken where the screws...

"If it died at idle and is now locked up, consider yourself lucky.....you didn't GRENADE your 16hp at 3600 under load!....instead you locked it up at idle and likely didn't hurt the crank and definately didn't crack the block.......It SUCKS, but it is the best possible situation for a locked rod...

"If it did, it probably would have only hurt the motor side of the hydro unit, and the input shaft would still turn, and if the motor side of it is destroyed, it will probably lock up the final drive such that the wheels will only spin through the spider gears. Further towing or trying to move...
