That Briggs will run a lot smoother at all speed ranges than a shake & bake KT17. I have a rebuilt 10 over Briggs L head in mine. Mounted soild just like the OEM 582 were. Nice machine Andrew. Should run you a long time.
I think you have the KT17 twin confused with the K341 16 HP single. The flat twin Kohlers are smooth running. The singles, not so much.

Man just goes to show you must depend on your luck, we've had 2 walker mowers with the Kohler motors. Neither impressed me with the longevity.
Luck has nothing to do with it.. B&S generally has made sub standard junk engines, but like anything your results may vary. The old adage a blind squirrel finds a walnut once in a while applies.

Now if your mowers have a Kohler COURAGE POS, then I'm with you. They are vile trash.

Does your 782 have cast iron rear end? My 782 ccc has cast iron and then they went to aluminum in latter models painted black.

You realize there are B&S motors out there with thousands of hours don't you? We have a concrete mixer with a Briggs on it that is 10 years old, runs 8 hours a day 5 days a week. And like I said the Kohler on our Walker mowers were junk. In general the cheap B&S that were put on the cheap push mowers from Lowes were trash. Just like your Kohler courage. I just wouldn't lump in general Briggs junk

You have your beliefs, and I have mine. We will agree to disagree.

Andrew - I repowered my IH built 782 with a B&S Vanguard 18hp over 15 years ago (Mar 2007) and have had zero problems. I work it hard, primarily with a QA42A snow thrower in wet, heavy Minnesota snow, a 10" Brinly plow, and a 2B tiller. Your results may vary, but for me it was the best move I ever made with my 782.

Those are the exact attachments that I want, besides the plow. Are those the model number I should be looking for for a snow blower and tiller?

Yes, the 2B tiller has the 5/8" pulley to match the 782 PTO pulley & drive belt. But if you have access to a model 2A, you could replace the 1/2" pulley with 5/8" & be good to go. The QA-42A snow thrower has the adjustable mounting bracket to fit older narrow frame Cubs or the wide frames, like the 782. The plain QA-42 is for narrow frames only and won't work with your 782. Good luck in your search.

You need a heat shield installed to vent engine temp out of the engine bay for better performance out of the electric clutch and oil brake down !!!!! Just like the Kohler, and Onan’s too.

A nice looking one just came up for sale in my area with cub iron wheel weights a snow blade, ag style tires and a 50" deck for 1900. Oh it also has a 18h kohler magnum. Nice looking unit. I think a lil on the high side but maybe not.
Pre pandemic I bought a 782 with a rebuilt 18h magnum and 50" deck for around 500. Lil rough around the edges but it runs nice. And had new front tires on it. Oh it is an ih built cub too.

Thanks, they put a new Briggs Vanguard 18ho repower. It came with the snow plow and an extra deck and deck carrier. What would you think it was worth? Hope I didn't over pay..
When I was selling cars, manager told me that any deal was a good deal as long as the customer thought so. Me, myself, couldn't get past ripping people off so my career was short lived.
But there's truth to that...in saying that if you were happy with what you spent, that's all that matters. It never fails, when you buy something, soon afterwards you'll find a better deal. But... here's the real deal, you got yourself a sweet looking tractor that will go for quite awhile as long as you take care of it and maintain it. So in the end, what one might consider overpriced or a steal, you got it and the transfer is done. Now all you have to do is enjoy your purchase... 👍😎👍

How much are they asking?

I wouldn't pay more than $800 for that machine. The Briggs is a downgrade to me. Much rather see a Series II KT 17, Magnum 18/20, or Command swap in there.
The Vanguard is unlike the other briggs. All of the old opposed twins had issues. A Vanguard, Command, Honda, Predator engines are light years ahead. They are used in ag and industry and will run many more hours than the old flatties. They run smoother and use way less gas.

I have a pair of Magnum 18's with almost 2000 hours. They don't leak or smoke. They are fuel pigs, but the longevity speaks for itself. If I do a repower, the Command series will be the only engine I will look at.
