So, I went to install the Starter/Generator and noticed that one of the wire connection posts is very loose. Will have to look into that at lunch.

Sure is!!! If you just throw it in the S*** Can it'll probably end up exploding. Why don't you just give it to an unfriendly neighbor and tell him to use it when his lawn mower won't start :errrr:

Does this engine have compression that Dustin didn't tell us about???

And by the way Dustin, be careful installing the S/G. When you're holding it up against the side of the block trying to install the 2 bolts on the ends of the mount please don't let it slip out of your hand and swing down and hit the curved section of the wide frame. It has a nasty habit of breaking the back end cap of the S/G if you do that. Don't ask me how I know (at least 3 times). I will tell you they used to sell just that end cap as a replacement part, but doubt CC Specialties has them.
 
I see Dustin is still fooling around with the S/G in another one of his posts. Sure wish he'd tell us if the engine has any compression.

And by the way, I need to make a correction to my post just above. I checked and see CC Specialties DOES HAVE the back end replacement caps for S/G's. What surprises me is that it's the really old style that is cast iron and has that little "oiler" spring cap. Talk about going back in time.

Head removed! Never having really worked on engines until now, I can't tell from physically turning it over if it has compression. It was super cool to see that big piston move!

It isn't super easy to turn over, but it isn't difficult either. However, the starter/generator needs parts and maybe a rebuild before I can go further.

Do the valves move? Open and close once each in two engine revolutions.
 
Looks like a runner to me, as to the valves, at least the exhaust is not up. Looks like it need a head gasket though.

That goes to show, no compression does not always mean no compression. Can't tell for sure about the valves, but I bet if it were cleaned up real good, along with the carb it would run fine. :cubwinker:

Yup, guess the PO didn't know what he was talking about. That piston goes round and round and round and the valves move up and down, up and down, up and down, so there's gotta be ole c-o-m-p-r-e-s-s-i-o-n-y. :errrr:

Dustin - ok, we'll give you a little benefit since you now disclosed you're somewhat of a novice as far as these engines and knowing about compression. I had tried to describe how it may rotate (or not) and show compression as best I could. I can understand you not really knowing and trying to rotate it, assuming you had the gear shift in Neutral, made sure the PTO was dis-engaged. Even with that you have to either rotate the crankshaft at the basket pulley (big pulley at the front where the S/G belt is installed) or you have to rotate the flywheel side of the crankshaft (where the driveshaft connects to that little pulley and coupler and the clutch parts are really in the way on a gear drive tractor). But I see you figured her out and rotated it pretty good in your video. :)

Sure wish you had a Cub Cadet friend close by so you might just borrow an S/G. You mentioned a loose screw on one of the S/G terminals. Often that isn't really a big deal but you'll have to remove the end cap plate for a look see. Something could very well be broken inside. My best suggestion for you assuming you're trying to do this on the cheap since you don't know yet if it will run, etc., is to pick up a used S/G someplace. They used to just go for about $50 back in the day, but I haven't checked in a long time. I just had a look see at ePain and there is one in an auction that might go kinda cheap. Otherwise there are a couple used parts dealers up in PA that you may have already heard about. Or, you can post in the Wanted section on here and see if anyone has one to sell you - or maybe someone will read this an offer to sell you one. (Probably have to tell your wife it's good to have some spare parts just like her extra pairs of shoes, not the Sunday pair of course). Really hoping you have some luck.

There's one for sale in the classifieds in northern New Mexico, along with lots of other stuff for $100. Don't know bout shipping cost.

Ooh No Stich - now you had to go and send him a Kohler Bible. It doesn't even have a section for S/G's. Now I don't know what Dustin is gonna do. The Kohler Service Manual is a great tool but it's got so much additional info that doesn't apply to the IH CC spec'd engines. Next thing Dustin will be asking where his fuel pump is (that wasn't used on the 1x8/9 or Quiet Lines).

I wish Charlie would'a included the IH produced manual they put together for the 1x8/9 and Quiet Line Engines (and the 1282). I've got a paper copy GSS-1465-B (rev April 1984) but don't know how I could convert to electronic (well easily convert). It has a nice small section on S/G's that don't tell you to much. And nice section on carbs that tells you just enough without telling you all the different carbs that Kohler used and shows in the Kohler manual.
