I have a restored 2027 Super Cub with Kwik-Way loader. Original owner stated housings has a few stripped/repaired bolt holes when loader brackets was attached. Because of that, I am cautious of the amount of stress on it when using loader. I would like to upgrade the cast aluminum differential/housing with cast iron. I have read where individuals have done this. I think the part #'s are 717-3202 & 17-3220.

This above my capabilities (85 yrs) to do this or where to find the correct housings. I live in Wisconsin and am planning to go to Portage, WI. for the Garden Tractor Daze. Hopping to find some help there. Taking my granddaughter's husband along, he is showing interest in obtaining a older garden tractor.

Any advice on the parts needed and/or individuals with knowledge of doing this would be appreciated.

Almost forgot, the hour meter stop working. Is there a way of checking without removing gas tank? Thanks again!!

I am assuming you own a 2072. The cast iron rear you seek needs to be from an early 982. The issue is that they may have stronger cases, but the coarse spline axles are weaker. To have the best of both worlds, the axles, carrier and ring gear can be swapped into the cast rear housing. One of the axle tube will need to be milled down.

The hour meter can be easily checked and removed without removing the fuel tank. Only visual check is to ensure the wires are firmly connected on the back of the unit. Other than verifying that you have power going to the unit, there isn't much more than be done to it. If it is defective, it will need to be replaced.

The thing to do would be to find a cast iron transaxle from any older hydrostatic drive machine with external brakes and then swap in all the guts from the aluminum rear.

Doesn't the rear need to be from a Super?

1811, the housings are the same but you will need to change the guts.

If it's the front tabs on the housing that are broke just put a set of rear braces on it.

My 2072 had the tab broke so I welded it back on and put the brace kit on it.

This was the first time I TIG welded aluminum so I know it probably doesn't look that good but from what I hear the front tabs are not needed with the braces.

Plan on going to Portage for garden tractor show to look for an empty cast iron housing to swap the guts from my 2072 aluminum casting. would appreciate any other suggestions.
So far, I have been told that housings from 1811 & 982 would work. I don't know if that is the only option or if other garden tractors from that series would work. I cannot find the part #'s for the 1811 or 982 to cross reference with other models.
When looking on line for Cub Cadet parts manual, if part is not available, the part number is not listed. The only parts manuals I have left are for the Super Cub series.
If I can obtain the proper empty iron housing to swap the guts, them I have to find somebody to do the work. Must be some capable party in Wisconsin to do it. But first things first. Again, any info will be helpful--Thanks

1811 has an aluminum housing. 982 may have an aluminum housing depending on when it was made.

You need an external brake rearend from one of the following tractors: 107, 127, 147, 109, 129, 149, 169, 1250, 1450, 1650

If you aren't able to do the work yourself, you are probably better off just installing the brace kit described above, though.
