Was out discing the garden with the 72. When all a sudden it shut off. Has gas in tank, but no spark at the plug.
Tried different plug, no spark.
Where do I start??

do you have any kind of test equipment? A 12 volt test light or a multi meter?
Easiest / quickest check is maybe see if the points are moving open and closed...

Have 12.55 volts at the hot side of coil.
How do I test the points as the bottom screw is inaccessible with motor in frame.

Test light blinks when engine turns over, attached to negative post of battery and probe end is on negative side of coil.

That is the points breaking. Unhook the condenser from the coil and read the ohms on the end you unhooked to ground. The reading should go up quickly.

This is what I have for a multi meter, what setting on the ohms scale, where do I hook red and black wire to check condenser?

And as long as you've been messin with Cubs, it has your stumped? Like some goof says all the time! COME ON MAN!!!!!! :wedgie:
Have not worked on a cub since 2008, can not even locate my Kohler manual or any paper files from back than.

Since the test light goes on and off, that shows the points are making and breaking, so they should be ok for now. so either the condensor or the coil has failed, Since you're showing volts on the negative side of the coil, that says the primary circuit of the coil works.. I'd be leaning towards replacing the condensor - but you can rotate the motor so the points are closed, then use a screw driver and make the points open - see if you have spark from the coil when you do this. If it doesn't , then the coil has probably failed.

When I have had condensers fail the machine would at least try to run, but not well. When I've had a coil go it was like I turned the key and shut the tractor off. My bet is coil.

Im leaning toward the coil, as I get no reaction from test light probe in center of coil when turning over motor with starter.

I agree with coil as I just posted about 2 of them going bad recently. Once was like I turned off the key, second like it was running out of gas.
Replaced with a Bosch blue coil and (after burning up my brand new transdenser 🤬 ), it fired right up and is running better than before... (y)(y)
