Hi folks,
I'm interested in buying this 1882. The gentleman selling it states its in good order. He's asking $1350.00 for it. Is the machine worth it?

I don't know much of anything about the MTD built cubs but that 1882 looks like it's in pretty nice shape to me, very clean machine 👍

Greg, it looks good. It's 30 yrs old and "averaged "25 hrs per yr of use.Probably sold from 4 to 5000 new.The only questions are,the intended use and does 30 yrs feel ok to you ??You can buy a box store new mower for less that will maybe last 5 yrs........points to ponder it's produced by MTD not IH

It looks like it's in good shape. Parts are still available for the most part. I planned on using a 3 point on it. Mow an acre of grass etc.

Hopefully someone with some experience with these models can give you a little insight. Even though it is an MTD built machine I would hope that the 1882 models were before there was any real major decline in quality and durability. As with any machine I'm sure they have their own set of pros and cons and maybe someone on the forum can point out some things to look for?

Greg,I did some looking on the net.I couldn't find 1 sold at auction but a couple for sale at around 1500+.For that kind of $ I would have lengthy talk with present owner. How long has he owned it,what has he repaired and seriously ask for details and why he wants to sell. Get as much history as you can. It's your earned cash don't hesitate to question politely......And if it fits..do it...

I have 2 Cub Cadet 1864.... i do not know what differences from 1862 to the 1864 , possibly the 1862 does not have power steering?
the engine looks the same as the 1864.
the tractor in the pics looks very clean, probably won’t find a better one.
Do not let the age bother you

I have 1. It has 18 Kohler magnum motor & not the command that you show in that one. From the little I know. They are a very solid & reliable tractor. Must be careful with plastic hood & side panels. Check brake pads. That model has steering brakes. Depending on how it was used ,they may be thin. Change oil & filter on engine & trans , grease & enjoy. I also have a 2182. The pictures show 1of those in the back round. I have 2 lots of ground . 1 is 7acres & the others is 5acres of grass . Both have long driveways. They cut grass & blow snow, plus. Just telling you that so you know . They do not just sit around. Would still feel better at $1100. But that's up to you. Good luck.

I would check for loose, missing bolts that hold the tranny to the frame, Broken plastic, check for leaks.

That's not an 1882 with that engine, that last picture is a Command. It's the wrong picture or it's a 2084.

The Command engine is preferable.

I think you are correct. Check what Lew listed. Not low hours but still has life left. Most likly will need coils and maybe head gaskets.

The 1882 is closely related to the 2284. I would buy if it was within reach!

I've had great luck over the years with Cubs around this vintage. My very first was a 149 (I know, much older) that mowed a couple of acres and kept the drive plowed for about ten years.

Next was an 1862 and an 1861 both needed their ignition modules replaced, other than that, they were workhorses. They used the Kohler Command, Much better fuel economy. Next I went back in time with an 1872 SGT, Snowblower and hydraulic angle plow. That older series had Kohler Magnums and steel side panels.

My current Cub is a 2284, it's a SGT also. The SGT can be identified by the dual brake on the right side. They are also taller, bigger tires front and rear and the newer ones utilized the Command series. Ibelieve all but the earliest SGT's had power steering. In my opinion the 2284 is the best cub ever produced. That might get me lit up here, but I can handle it. Here's a couple of the tractors mentioned.
