Charlie: thanks for the exploded views. Mine has the non gripped handle. Looks like the tube is one big welded assembly. Dennis: I got the button off OK but would like to get the long shaft out (only if I need to) to clean it out and lube. Any advice on this? Dave

JIM, KRAIG - I replaced that casting on My QA-36 several years ago.....8-10 maybe. I paid more for that casting than I paid for the whole snow blower! New Shaft, needle bearings, saved the sprockets & chain.... If the sprocket gets into the bearings too far the needles fly out, shaft gets into the casting and your done. And it doesn't take long for the steel components to eat away that soft alum. casting!

David P., that rod won't come out easily and you should not need to remove it. If you lubricate it generously with PB Blaster it'll wash out any rusty buildup. I did this on the Original that I'm refurbishing and it seems to have worked well. Just keep spraying it in and let id run through. Be sure to place a rag or oil dry or something under the lift rod to "catch" the drippings.

DAVE - If Your lift handle is similar to what was on My 72 the rod isn't removable once the rockshaft & handle are assembled. I had to buy new rod material and cut to length, make threads for the button on the top end and heat/bend the lower end of the rod to repair Mine. If You got a new spring installed, I'd use some PB Blaster or WD-40, Liquid Wrench, etc. to flush the ID of the lift lever, then run some oil down inside the lift lever to lube & prevent rust. If You pound the rod out it hits the rockshaft and has to bend and You can reinstall it but it will still be bent and will bind and not work.

That is exactly what happend to my QA-36A. Drive shaft was still good, but the rest had gone bad.
New sprokets, chain, casting, bearings (including one for the auger). Replacing the sprocket on the auger was a bit of work. Basicly I did a complete tear down and rebuild, but not the drive shaft. Good till 2030 or so.

Any one ever rebuild the drive shaft on a QA thrower?

Stripped Engine mount bolt on 149.
I thought I was ready for Spring then notice this while putting everything back together. The other three are in good shape.
Will this wait untill next Fall or should I pull the Motor and fix it now? If so should I re-tap to the next size or go with a Helicoil. Or is there another option?
Thanks, Herb

Dennis: Sounds like its kinda involved, think I'll replace the button spring, flush out the tube as best I can, and see How it does. I've got enough other %#$@ to repair. Thanks! Dave

Herb,

I never have owned a 129 (have a 127), but I would not wait. It is not going to get better and the worse may be more work than it is now, but maybe it will last for years with 3 bolts.
I tend to fix things, so I don't loose sleep.

When possibel, I will most likely weld the hole, drill and tap or heilcoil. Not sure on heliciol, the material wall thicknes is a factor for helicoils.

I am sure someone here has been there - done that.
However I have not.

Herb - I agree with Jim. I'd fix it now. I helicoiled the engine mount bolts on a 129 that had an alum. oil pan. First time I ever used Helicoils and they've held for over 10 yrs. I think they'd work better in a cast iron pan however. Plenty of material for Helicoils in the pan but I don't think drilling & tapping for the next larger size capscrews is a good option, they're already 3/8" and 7/16" may be a tight fit.

Bryan,

Would you happen to have a pic of the deflector in use?

I assume it attaches over the exhaust pipe?

Herb- I just helicoiled the pan of the K301 that went into Loader-Mutt... it had two that where half-stripped, the other two were loose-fit, but complete. I had a friend drill and heli-coil, then I installed studs, nuts and washers. My reasoning for studs, nuts and washers over bolts, is that the pan appeared to get chewed-up more as a result of cross-threading on installation. By going to studs, it also engaged the entire pan thread area, while the nut and stud (on the other end) took all the wear-abuse. Worked out great in my case, perhaps it would in yours too. Sure was easier gettin' everything started- especially the front nuts and washers!

Ken U,
That would be interesting to see what th SN is on the 500K. One would think it would be around 499,500 depending on how many of the prototypes and other stuff they counted. I have often wondered what the SN of the 100,000th Farmall regular was (and if it still exists for that matter). It would be hard to determine the 1 millionth CC since they changed the SN system.
You would think they would have kept track and played it up in their advertising (unless it hasn't been built yet). I was thinking not too long ago that they should be getting close if they haven't built it yet.

Charlie (Digger),
Great info on the thrower modification. I sent 3 pics to Kraig because I could not get the pics under 50k. My 1450 threw the snow like never before. And I don't like the Quiteline series.

20 + feet, not pushing it AS A TEST!

I'm down to 12 Cubs now but have had over 50 and never had a Cub throw this far.

What a blast!

Thanks for the $22.00 thrill!

Got 6 inches out there tonight. I tried pushing with the blade but it just falls over the top. I think I'll put the thrower on in the morning. Up until yesterday we only had an inch of snow. A little work in the garage and then I get to play in the snow the rest of day tomorrow!
